When two computers want to communicate they establish a connection using a set of rules (protocol) called TCP (Tranmission Control Protocol) that allow the two computers to send & recieve data from each other. FTP is an unencrypted protocol to transfer data and due to this it has declined in popularity because of it's lack of security.
